Overview

The Diamond Mark of Quality (also referred to as D-Mark) is a voluntary product certification scheme operated by Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS). It is a mark of excellence awarded to manufacturers (either based locally or abroad) which has demonstrated high degree of excellence in product manufacturing and quality. D-Mark permit holders thus qualify automatically for the standardization mark (SM) without any additional payments. The permit to use the mark is valid for period of four years subject to satisfactory quality performance and full compliance to other contractual obligations signed between KEBS and the permit holder.

Diamond Mark Certification Process
For new/grant applications of DM permit, the manufacturer shall provide product compliance history to standards at intervals of three (3) months minimum within the last one (1) year.
For renewal applications of DM permit(s), the manufacturer shall provide product compliance history to standards at intervals of one (1) year minimum within the last four (4) years.
Foreign diamond mark applicants shall provide evidence of the existence of a local agent.

Application Process

Application

Forms and Necessary Details

Dully fill in duplicate the Diamond mark application form (STA 1)
Dully fill in assessment form (STA 3) (Diamond Mark applicants)
Dully fill in duplicate the standards levy notification form (SL1))
Provide us with a copy of company registration form, CR12 for Ltd Companies, evidence for registration for CBOS, Cooperatives societies, self-help groups etc.
Pay the required product certification fees as appropriate
Acquire Product Standards (specification and sector codes of practices)
Application shall be reviewed for adequacy and assigned to an officer/inspector.

Evaluation

Preparation and Procedure

Carry out inspection on your production process and evaluate process controls in place based on Kenya standards or approved specifications. The factory inspection criteria will be based on;
  1. The quality checks and sampling points in the production system
  2. Evidence of quality control on Incoming raw material, In-process controls and Finished products
  3. Testing and quality records
  4. Handling of non-compliances and Rejects
  5. Product recall strategy
  6. Product labelling
  7. Calibration/verification status of equipment
  8. Handling of customer complaints
  9. Plant hygiene and housekeeping
  10. Environmental consideration
Discuss and agree on scheme of supervision and control.
If nonconformities are identified at the point of inspection, the manufacturer has the responsibility to undertake corrective action and inform KEBS to confirm the actions taken.

03.

Review and Decision Making

Review and Certification Decision

Upon compliance to all requirements a Diamond Mark Permit is issued with a unique permit number. The manufacturer shall display the Diamond Mark Logo and the permit number on the product label. The permit shall be valid for 4 years from the date of issue. During the validity period, KEBS shall carry out surveillance inspection in the factory and in the market.
A database of Diamond Mark Certified products is maintained on the KEBS website.
